Life

Schmidt was born in 1879 in the forester's house in Balster in the Dramburg district in Pomerania . He attended high school in Greifswald and studied at the University of Greifswald , where he in 1904 to Dr. phil. received his doctorate. He chose the profession of high school teacher and in 1905 passed the state examination for higher education . After stints at the teachers ' college in Pyritz and as a senior teacher in Stargard in Pomerania , he became a teacher at the Victoria School in Gdansk in 1908. He later worked as a senior student adviser to the cultural department of the Senate of the Free City of Danzig . In 1934 he was retired as a specialist advisor and forced to retire in 1935 because he did not conform to the prevailing political ideas of the time, especially in folklore.

In Danzig he was involved in the board of the Danzig Heimatbund and the Reichsbund der Danzig . In addition, he was the last chairman of the Peace Society in Danzig , which did not submit to the Führer principle and existed until 1945. He published various works, in particular on the history of the city of Gdansk . He also devoted himself to folklore, especially puzzles. In addition, he dealt with the People's Book of the Eternal Jew . He lived in Gdansk until he was expelled in August 1945.

Schmidt came to Greifswald in September 1945, where he was department head for folklore at the Institute for German Philology until 1956 and did a lot for rebuilding the university and the institute after the war.
