Life

Arnold Gilg was a son of the Christian Catholic pastor Karl Gilg and Laure geb. Soutter. His younger brother Otto (* 1891; † 1976) was also a Christian Catholic clergyman and church historian.

He attended primary school and high school in Zurich before studying theology in Bern and Tübingen from 1906 to 1910 . In 1910 he received by Bishop Edward Herzog , the priesthood and was then as vicar active in Berne. In 1914 he was promoted to Dr. theol. doctorate , in 1915 his habilitation followed . From 1915 until his retirement in 1957 he was a professor at the Christian Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bern , initially with a teaching position for systematic theology , from 1941 for church and dogma history and pastoral care . 1928-29 he was rector of the University of Bern.

As a university lecturer, Gilg was theologically committed to Karl Barth's basic approach . This led him to a critical rethinking of the old church and occidental tradition (including Christian Catholicism). In 1961 he received an honorary doctorate (Dr. theol. Hc) from the University of Basel .

Arnold Gilg married Elisabeth Naef from Zurich in 1917. One son from this marriage was the Swiss historian and political scientist Peter Gilg .
