Arnold Hecht
Arnold Hecht and Arend Hecht († April 6, 1411 in Danzig , Teutonic Order ) was mayor of the legal city of Danzig from 1407 to 1411.
Life
Hecht was 1392 alderman and in 1393 councilor of the Main City Gdansk. In 1398 he was appointed by Grand Master Konrad von Jungingen as one of the commanders of the order's fleet in the fight against the Vitalienbrüder off Gotland . In 1400 he became a judge in Danzig. In 1306 he commanded a fleet of the Teutonic Order against the Vitalienbrüder off Friesland .
Arnold Hecht was elected one of the four mayors of the right city of Danzig in 1407. That year he negotiated with representatives of the English Crown on behalf of the Order in The Hague . After the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410, he and the mayor Letzkau subordinated the city of Danzig to the Polish king . After the First Peace of Thorn in 1411, the city was given back to the order. There were violent disputes between the new commander of Danzig Heinrich von Plauen and the city. After a pacification offer from Plauens, he invited the mayors Conrad Letzkau and Arnold Hecht and the councilor Bartholomäus Gross to his castle. There the three were killed on the same day. The act was initially kept secret, but after three days the bodies were finally released.
Arnold Hecht is buried with Konrad Letzkau near the main altar in St. Mary's Church in Gdansk. The inscription reads: Hic iacent Honorabiles Viri Conradus Letzkau et Arnoldus Heket, Proconsules Civitatis Dantzke, qui obierunt Feria Secunda post Festum Palmarum, Anno Domini 1411. Orate pro eis. (Here lie the honorable Messrs. Conradus Letzkau and Arnoldus Heket, who died on the second Monday after Palm Sunday in the year of the Lord 1411. Pray for them.) .
