from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arnold Markowitsch Kossewitsch ( Russian Арнольд Маркович Косевич ; born July 7, 1928 in Tultschyn ; † October 3, 2006 ) was a Ukrainian theoretical physicist and solid-state physicist .

Life

Kossewitsch studied physics at the University of Kharkov with a degree in 1951. He then worked at IM Lifschitz on his candidate dissertation , with which he was promoted to candidate of science in 1954 . He then moved to the University of Chernivtsi , where he received his doctorate in science in 1957 .

1957–1974 Kosevich worked at the Physics and Technology Institute in Kharkov . 1974–2003 he headed the department for theoretical physics at the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Technology in Kharkov, which was initiated in 1960 by BI Werkin , AA Galkin , BN Eselsohn and IM Dmitrenko and which now bears Werkin's name. In 1990 he became a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .

Kosevich worked as a theoretical physicist in the field of the electronic properties of metals , the mechanical properties of real crystals and systems with magnetic order . Together with IM Lifschitz, he established the connection between the oscillation of the magnetic properties of metals and the geometry and topology of the Fermi surface . In 1953 he discovered quantum effects in the electrical conductivity of thin layers .
