Arocatus longiceps is a bug from the family of ground bugs (Lygaeidae).

features

The bugs are 5.5 to 6.6 millimeters long. The red and black colored animals are almost unmistakable, but have a certain resemblance to the cinnamon bug ( Corizus hyoscyami ), which is much more strongly colored. There is the closely related species Arocatus roeselii , which only differs in subtleties.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from the Caucasus across Asia Minor and southern Europe to southern Central Europe. However, it also occurs increasingly further north. It was found in Styria for the first time in 1995; it has now been found throughout Austria, but only frequently in the east. The species is now also at home in Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary. In Germany, it has been found in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony, Berlin and Brandenburg. Since 2007 it has also been documented from Great Britain.

Way of life

The animals live on oriental plane trees ( Platanus orientalis ) and their hybrids, but are also found on linden ( Tila ), hornbeam ( Carpinus ), maple ( Acer ) and chestnut ( Castanea ). Mating takes place in May; the adults of the new generation appear in June. In favorable years, adults of a second generation develop by October. The animals can also be found in apartments for wintering. Usually overwintering takes place in large clusters under the bark of plane trees.
