Vincent Wilburn

Vincent "Vince" Wilburn, Jr. (* 1958 in Chicago ) is an American drummer and producer of fusion and funk music who played a crucial role in Miles Davis' late work . Davis' nephew is also one of his estate administrators .

Wilburn is the son of Dorothy Mae Davis, sister of Miles Davis, and her husband Vincent Wilburn, Sr. He started drumming pots and pans when he was five when he was five years old. On the advice of Miles Davis, he received a drum kit from his parents when he was six. As a nine-year-old boy, he was allowed to sit behind Jack De Johnette's drums at a concert by his uncle at the Chicago jazz club Plugged Nickel . While in high school, he formed his own bands, but also played with Time, Space & Distance and was used as a studio musician for recordings of The Dells . He received his musical training at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. In 1979 he giggged with guitarist Pete Cosey . In 1980 he played in the funk band AL7 , which initially practiced in his mother's basement and whose rhythm section was invited by Davis in 1980 to New York. There Wilburn and his colleagues rehearsed with Davis and played the first pieces for the album The Man with the Horn . AL7 then recorded with Ramsey Lewis . Wilburn also worked with Oscar Brown . In 1983 he became a member of Cameo .

Wilburn was already involved as an associate producer on the Davis album Decoy , which was released in the spring of 1984. In the summer of 1984, Davis brought in Wilburn to co-produce his album You're Under Arrest . There he also shared the drum chair with Al Foster . After the end of the recordings, Davis brought him into his touring band, where he stayed until 1987. In 1985 Miles Davis invited him to work in Copenhagen as a drummer on his album Aura , which received a Grammy in 1990 . In 1989 he went to Los Angeles , where he played and produced with Ron Bishop ( Piano Vibrations ) and other musicians before starting his production company NEFDRUM, which starred with Billy Preston , Darryl Jones , Charley Drayton , Ivan Neville , Ray Parker Jr. , Wah Wah Watson , Freddie Washington , Randy Hall and Phil Upchurch ( Tell the Truth ). In 2006 he was involved in the Miles from India project, with which he toured internationally and whose double album was nominated for a Grammy in 2008. He currently leads the Miles Electric Band , which performed with Jimmy Cobb in 2012 . In 2019 he released the recordings of Davis' album Rubberband (which he is currently re-producing) .
