The Man with the Horn is a fusion album by Miles Davis that was released in 1981. It was Davis' first release of new recordings since 1975.

background

Davis is supported on the album by younger musicians such as Al Foster , Bill Evans , Mike Stern and Barry Finnerty . He recorded the album with three different bands between May 1980 and March 1981. First, on the recommendation of his nephew Vincent Wilburn, he began with a group of funk musicians from Chicago, who performed there as AL7 and, after listening to them play over the phone, had them fly to New York, where he rehearsed with them and went to the studio several times. But the music this band could play wasn't complex enough; Musicians who were friends, such as Al Foster or Dave Liebman, advised Davis after he had played the recordings for them against delving deeper into it.

So in January 1981 Davis chose other musicians for the remainder of the album who came from New York; He only recruited Marcus Miller two hours before the first admission with him. The band with which he recorded the most recently recorded track "Fat Time" was made up again: Mike Stern replaced guitarist Barry Finnerty, who was fired for playing things Davis didn't want to hear. With the exception of Sammy Figueroa, this was his regular touring band for the next two years.

The album was rock-oriented, mixing 1980s pop with improvised funk and fusion . Davis plays his traditional trumpet style on the album , although the title track “The Man with the Horn” also features trumpet played with wah-wah , similar to the recordings from the 1970s . Singing can also be heard there.

reception

Scott Yanow rated the album cautiously, gave it two and a half out of five stars on Allmusic and wrote:

“Miles Davis' first comeback record finds the trumpeter a bit shaky and has a few poppish throwaway tracks; it is doubtful if anyone really remembers the title cut or Shout . "

"Miles Davis' first comeback album thinks the trumpeter is a bit shaky and has a few poppy throwaway tracks; Hard to assume that someone will really remember the theme song or shout . "
