Arsacius Seehofer (in the Roman index Arsatius Schoffer or Arsatius Sehofer ; * around 1505 in Munich , † 1539 or 1545 in Winnenden ) was a German Reformation theologian .

Life

Seehofer was the son of a wealthy craftsman in Munich. On September 23, 1518 he was enrolled at the University of Ingolstadt , where he stayed temporarily in Wittenberg in the spring of 1521 . There he continued his studies with Philipp Melanchthon without being enrolled at the University of Wittenberg . During this time, as letters show, he became a follower of the teachings of Martin Luther . However, he returned to Ingolstadt in the autumn of 1522. At the instigation of Johannes Eck, he had to distance himself from Luther's teachings in order to obtain the master ’s degree.

In 1523 Seehofer gave a lecture on the letters of Paul based on Melanchthon's teaching. Then there was a house search and 17 theses were compiled from his papers, which he had to revoke. He escaped a heretic trial and was subsequently imprisoned in Ettal Abbey . As a result of Seehofer's revocation and arrest, there was a relational publication activity between Reformation and Catholic theologians. The time between 1523 and 1534 is largely unclear. Maybe he was in Wittenberg after his escape from Ettal Abbey and probably near Celle for some time . On the mediation of Melanchthon, he was also temporarily active as a schoolmaster in Eisfeld and possibly from 1535 as a teacher at the grammar school near St. Anna in Augsburg, which had been a Protestant educational institution since 1531.

Seehofer was mediated by Erhard Schnepf on May 6, 1535 preacher in Leonberg in the Duchy of Württemberg . In 1537 he moved to the pastorate in Winnenden . His sermon book, published in 1538, is one of the earliest theological works from the Württemberg Reformation.
