Kind Lewis

Arthur "Art" Lewis (* 1936 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American jazz musician ( drums ).

Live and act

Lewis grew up in a musical family in Los Angeles ; he began his career in San Francisco , where he took lessons from Philly Joe Jones . He played in local clubs like Jimbo's Bop City , etc. a. with Harold Land and Bud Powell . With Monty Waters and Dewey Redman , he co-led a big band that performed in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1968 he moved to New York City and worked in jazz clubs and venues such as Village Vanguard , Slug's , Ali's Alley , The Tin Palace, and The Public Theater. He played u. a. with Dewey Redman, Dexter Gordon , Clifford Jordan , Jon Hendricks , Sam Rivers , Andrew Hill , Bobby Hutcherson , John Handy , Ronnie Boykins , Joe Lee Wilson and Marty Cook . In the field of jazz he was involved in eleven recording sessions between 1974 and 2011, most recently in Sn Francisco in the Russo Alberts Trio around the pianist Don Alberts and the bassist Don Russo . From 1972 he was married to the reggae singer Aura Lewis (1947-2015).
