Art Linkletter (born Gordon Arthur Kelly ; born July 17, 1912 in Moose Jaw , Saskatchewan , Canada ; † May 26, 2010 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American radio and television presenter of Canadian origin.

Life

Childhood and youth

Art Linkletters birth parents gave him up for adoption when he was just a few weeks old . He was adopted by John Linkletter, an evangelical minister , and his wife, Mary. As a young man, Linkletter moved to California , where he studied at San Diego State University . Although his first choice was Springfield College in Massachusetts and he could not attend it due to a lack of funds, he still sponsored this institution as an adult.

Career

Linkletter began his acting career in the mid-1940s; his debut was the 1946 film musical People Are Funny by director Sam White . A year earlier, in 1945, Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) approached Linkletter and gave him the opportunity to run his own radio broadcast. Art Linkletter's House Party aired January 15, 1945 and became one of the longest-running radio shows in the United States, running daily for 22 years until October 13, 1967. Between September 1, 1952 and September 5, 1969, the program was even broadcast on television. At the same time, Linkletter took over on October 1, 1943, the moderation of People are Funny , a game show that he moderated until April 1, 1960. Linkletter was in front of the camera in other television programs, but these were not nearly as successful as the two already mentioned.

Private life

Art Linkletter led one of the longest marriages in Hollywood . He was married to his wife Lois Foerster from November 1935 until his death in May 2010. The couple had five children, but three of them died before their parents. Jack Linkletter (1937–2007) became a television presenter and actor like his father. Robert Linkletter (1944–1980) was killed in a traffic accident caused by a drunk woman. Diane Linkletter (1948-1969) committed under the influence of LSD at the age of 20 years suicide in which she jumped out the kitchen window to her death. The death of his daughter was the reason why Linkletter served on the drug prevention and education committee in the cabinet of US President Richard Nixon . Two other daughters of Art Linkletter are Dawn and Sharon.
