Arthuna or Arthoona ( Hindi अरथुना ) is a town with a population of about 6,000 in the Banswara district in the southeast of the Indian state of Rajasthan .

Location and climate

The place Arthuna is about 5 km east of the Mahi river about 44 km (driving distance) southeast of the district capital Banswara near the border with the state of Gujarat at an altitude of about 180  m . The climate is mostly dry and warm; Rain (approx. 990 mm / year) falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon season .

Approx. 90% of the population are Hindus ; almost 10% are Muslims . The male share of the population exceeds the female population by almost 5%. They mostly speak Rajasthani , Gujarati and Hindi .

economy

The villagers live - largely self-sufficient - almost exclusively from agriculture. In the village there are small traders, craftsmen and day laborers. Tourism hardly plays a role.

history

Arthuna (old name Utthunaka ) was one of the most important centers of the Paramara realm in the Middle Ages - after Ujjain and Dhar . This perished because of internal conflicts and ultimately because of the advancing Islamic armies that founded the Sultanate of Delhi in 1206 .

Attractions

The ruins of several Hindu temples from the 10th-12th centuries, which were destroyed by Islamic army units, are located near the site . Century. These show the style North Indian temple (eg. Kiradu Temple ) and usually consist of a vestibule ( mandapa ) and one of a highly articulated tower ( shikhara ) crowned Cella ( garbhagriha ) ; the best preserved temple in the group is the Mandaleshwar Shiva Temple .
