Arthur's Pass is a village in the New Zealand Alps on the South Island of New Zealand . The village is primarily of tourist importance and serves as a starting point and access to the Arthurs Pass National Park .

geography

Arthur's Pass is flanked by mountains over 1800  m high at an altitude of 730  m , about 5 km east of the pass of the same name, which is located at an altitude of 920  m . The place belongs to the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region . The Bealey River , a tributary of the Waimakariri River , flows through the village.

The New Zealand State Highway 73 , which connects the coastal cities of Christchurch on the east coast and Greymouth on the west coast, runs through the town. Arthur's Pass has also had rail services since 1923 when the Midland Line was completed and the local train station opened. The TranzAlpine tourist train currently runs once a day in each direction on this route between Christchurch and Greymouth . The route is also used for freight traffic.

history

The result is Arthur's Pass mid-1860s as a workers' camp as part of road over the pass. In 1866 the first carriages used the new pass road. The small town later served as a supply station for travelers, as the journey from coast to coast took two to three days. Between 1907 and 1923, the place housed numerous workers again, as the railway line was built over the pass and Arthur's Pass was driving the eastern part of the 8.5 km long Otira Tunnel .
