Arthur Baur (born February 19, 1915 in Zurich ; † September 17, 2010 in Männedorf ) was a Swiss journalist and linguist for Alemannic , Romansh and Esperanto .

Life

Baur was born on February 19, 1915 in Zurich as the son of chemistry professor Emil Baur . He studied English, Rhaeto-Romanic and Icelandic philology at the universities of Zurich, Uppsala and Stockholm . He became a journalist and publicist and was editor-in-chief of the Winterthur daily Der Landbote from 1967 to 1980 . From 1975 to 1982 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Dispatch Agency . In 1943 he married Heidi Baur-Sallenbach and had two children with her.

Arthur Baur was one of the most important Swiss authors and linguists for Esperanto , Swiss German and Romansh .

Swiss German

Arthur Baur was one of the most important linguists in the Alemannic language. In 1939, with the help of his wife Heidi Baur-Sallenbach, he published the textbook of the Swiss German language Practical Language Teaching of Swiss German , of which the 13th, completely revised edition was published in 2008. In his work What is actually Swiss German? from 1983, Baur argues that Swiss German is not just a dialect, but an independent language.

Romansh

Baur was one of the few linguists who wrote scientific papers on the Romansh language. In 1984 his essay La Retroromanĉa (The Rhaeto-Romanic) appeared in Esperanto. In 1996 he published Allegra is not enough in German and in 1997 Viva la Grischa: A guide to the Romansh language of the Grisons .

Esperanto

Baur learned Esperanto in 1930 in high school and he was a member of the Esperanto Society Zurich, the Swiss Esperanto Society and the World Esperanto Federation . From 1980 to 1986 he was editor of Svisa Esperanto Revuo. He headed the information and press service during the 31st and 32nd Esperanto World Congress , both of which took place in Bern , and was a member of the Local Congress Committee of the 64th Esperanto World Congress in 1979 in Lucerne . He has published numerous books in Esperanto, including the work La Fenomeno Svislando . From 1946 he worked for the Swiss Radio International (SRI) , which was then still called the Swiss Shortwave Service, with the weekly broadcasts in Esperanto, from 1947 he was in charge of these broadcasts and worked for the SRI's Esperanto program until 1991.
