Arthur Bluhm

Arthur Bluhm (born October 23, 1899 in Polish Cekzin , West Prussia ; died July 18, 1962 in Amarillo , Texas) was the last chief rabbi of Krefeld . After fleeing Germany he was a rabbi in Amarillo.

Life

Arthur Bluhm attended the Catholic grammar school in Konitz , where he graduated from high school in 1919. In 1920 he began to study philosophy and oriental philology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin. In 1922 he moved to the University of Würzburg . He received his doctorate on March 24, 1924.

He then studied in Berlin at the University for the Science of Judaism to become a rabbi. On March 8, 1927, he passed his exam. At this point a new rabbi was wanted in Krefeld because Joseph Levi was ill. From April 10, 1927 until the end of the year, Arthur Bluhm worked in Krefeld, initially as a second rabbi. On January 1, 1928, he then took over the office of Chief Rabbi. It was ceremonially introduced on February 8, 1928. At that time he was the youngest rabbi in Germany.

In April 1937 he was temporarily detained in the police prison. He was arrested on November 10, 1938 and deported to Dachau concentration camp on November 16 . He was released on December 9, 1938. Together with his wife, he managed to escape to the USA via the Netherlands on December 27, 1938 . In August 1941 he became rabbi at the Synagogue Temple B'nai Israel in Amarillo . It took 70 years for a rabbi to work again in Krefeld.

Arthur Bluhm married Johanna Heimann (born in 1906 in Danzig- Oliva ) in Danzig on January 2, 1928 . The couple was childless.
