Arthur C. Martinez (born September 25, 1939 in New York City , New York ) is an American businessman , former CEO of Sears and Chairman of the Board of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. He is best known for saving the Sears , Roebuck, and Company (Co.) .

Life

Arthur Martinez was born on September 25, 1939 to Arthur F. Martinez and Agnes Caulfield Martinez. His mother was an Irish immigrant who worked as a saleswoman in a department store. His father had Spanish ancestry and worked as a fish wholesaler .

education

Martinez graduated from New York University Tandon School of Engineering with a bachelor's degree. He also earned an MBA from Harvard University . He also has a doctorate .

work life

Prior to joining Sears, Martinez worked for a variety of companies including RCA Records . He entered the retail business in 1980 when he became Chief Financial Officer of Saks Fifth Avenue .

In 1992 Martinez became head of the Sears Merchandise Group and three years later CEO of Sears, Roebuck and Company . During his eight years with Sears, Martinez initiated a major revision of the company's corporate policy and made the company profitable again. He became known for changing entrepreneurial marketing strategies . In 2000, Martinez resigned from his position but continued to serve on the board of directors for other companies.

From 2000 to 2002 Martinez was Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago .

Arthur Martinez has been Director of Abercrombie & Fitch since January 28, 2014 and Executive Chairman since December 2014 . Between January 27, 2014 and December 2014, he was non-executive chairman . On February 3, 2018, he resigned from his position as Executive Chairman. Terry Borman was appointed as his successor .
