Arthur Georgi (politician)

Arthur Robert Georgi (born March 4, 1843 in Mylau ; † November 9, 1900 ibid) was a German banker , entrepreneur and politician ( National Liberal Party ). He was one of the leading national liberal politicians in the Kingdom of Saxony .

The son of the Saxon businessman and politician Robert Georgi (1802–1869) and his wife Emilie geb. Brückner († 1879) received his training from a private tutor and never attended a public school. In 1859 he started a commercial apprenticeship at the silk company Schletter & Co. in Leipzig . From 1862 to 1863 he completed a degree in camera sciences at the University of Göttingen . During his studies he became a member of the Brunsviga fraternity in Göttingen. After returning to Mylau in 1863, he joined his father's banking company founded by his grandfather Christian Gotthelf Brückner . Stays abroad in France and Switzerland followed in 1866. In 1867 his father appointed him as managing director of the banking company. After his father's death, he was the sole managing director of the bank from 1869. In 1882 he founded the wool combing company Georgi & Co. together with his brother Otto Georgi (1831–1918), Lord Mayor of Leipzig from 1877 to 1899.

From 1862 Georgi was a member of the Plauen Chamber of Commerce and Industry . From 1862 to 1870 and again from 1878 to 1882 he was its vice-president, from 1882 until his death he was its president. He was a member of the board of directors of the Sächsische Textil-Berufsgenossenschaft and its chairman for the Zwickau district. He was also a member of the Exchange Committee appointed by the Federal Council .

Like his brother, Georgi was politically active in the National Liberal Party. From 1875 he was the deputy mayor of his hometown Mylau. From 1879 until his death he represented the 21st urban constituency in the second chamber of the Saxon state parliament . In a by-election, the spinning mill owner Karl August Neidhardt was chosen as his successor. From 1887 on, Georgi was 2nd Vice President of the Landtag Chamber, in 1899 he was promoted to 1st Vice President, which office he held until his death. He was a full member of the state parliament committee for the administration of state schools and since 1895 a member of the railway council. He held the title of a Secret Commerce Councilor .

Georgi had been with Hedwig born in 1867. Beutler († 1912), daughter of the court director Karl Adolph Beutler, married in Reichenbach in Vogtland .

He was a co-founder of the people's sanctuaries for lung patients in Albertsberg and Carolagrün .

The city of Mylau honored him in 1900 with the award of honorary citizenship .
