Arthur Hanau
Arthur Hanau (born November 23, 1902 in Hanover ; died August 1, 1985 in Göttingen ) was a German agricultural scientist and pioneer in agricultural market research .
Life
Hanau was the son of a Stettin higher regional judge. After attending high school, he began an agricultural apprenticeship on an estate in Pomerania. From 1922 to 1925 he studied at the Agricultural University in Berlin, especially with Friedrich Aereboe . He completed his studies in 1927 with a dissertation on the subject of forecasting pig prices. In this work he coined the term pig cycle in Germany , which he called the pig price cycle and which has since been used in economics as a synonym for the occurrence of cyclical fluctuations in supply and demand. The work was published in 1928 as a quarterly issue at the Institute for Economic Research , the forerunner of the German Institute for Economic Research .
After submitting his dissertation, he initially worked at the Institute for Business Cycle Research from 1927 to 1930. From 1930 until its closure in 1933, he was employed at the Institute for Agricultural Market Research at the Agricultural University in Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in 1931 . As part of the National Socialist conformity and as a result of the associated withdrawal of the teaching license of the Berlin professor for market research Karl Brandt , his two employees Arthur Hanau and Hans Wilbrandt were initially banned from teaching. In 1934 the agricultural college lost its independence and was integrated into the Friedrich Wilhelms University .
From 1948 Hanau headed the Institute for Agricultural Market Research at the Federal Research Center for Agriculture (FAL) in Braunschweig, which was founded in 1947 . From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN. In 1955 he followed a call from the University of Göttingen to a chair for agricultural market theory .
Arthur Hanau died at the age of 82 on August 1, 1985 in Göttingen.
