Roderich Plate , (born July 22, 1907 in Berlin , † October 2, 1993 in Dießen am Ammersee ) was an agricultural market economist , co-editor of the agricultural economy magazine and advisor to the German government.

biography

Plate was born the son of a director of the Prussian House of Representatives in Berlin. The father, who ran a small farm on the outskirts of Berlin, familiarized his son with the practical tasks of agriculture at an early age.

After an agricultural apprenticeship, he worked as a manager of an agricultural business in Bavaria and began studying at the then Agricultural University in Berlin in 1929 . He became a student of Karl Brandt , who at that time began to establish agricultural market studies as a research and teaching area in Germany. From this new subject, Plate chose his dissertation topic in 1933: “The grain crises in the second half of the 19th century and in the present”.

After his doctorate as Dr. agr. moved to the Reich Statistical Office and was there in charge of evaluating the population, occupation and company census. Plate, who joined the NSDAP as a student in 1931, experienced a considerable rise to the position of general director of the census in the Reich Statistical Office. Why Plate was called up for military service as a simple soldier after 1942 has not yet been clarified.

In 1948, Plate was appointed as a research assistant at the newly founded Institute for Agricultural Market Research at the Agricultural Research Institute "FAL" in Braunschweig-Völkenrode. He was soon promoted to deputy director of the institute and represented Arthur Hanau from 1953 to 1955 while he was on leave for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome. When Hanau accepted a chair at the University of Göttingen, Plate was appointed director and professor of the Völkenroder Institute at the end of 1955. Here he knew how to use the favorable conditions for researching a large number of problems in agricultural markets and to further expand the institute, especially in terms of personnel.

In 1963, Plate accepted a position at the Hohenheim Agricultural University , where he founded the Institute for Agricultural Market Research there and represented agricultural market theory until his retirement in 1972.

In addition to Hanau, it is primarily thanks to Plate that German agricultural market research was able to quickly make up for the backlogs that had arisen in the 1930s and 40s and found international connections. With his market analyzes and previews of the markets for processed animal products, he has helped this branch of knowledge to gain a reputation in practical agriculture, agricultural policy and science.

Plate has put down his research results in around 200 scientific papers, some with the participation of his staff, in reports and books. For almost 20 years he was co-editor of the magazine “Agrarwirtschaft”, in which he regularly published his analyzes and previews. At times he and his employees played half of the respective monthly issues.

For many years, Plate was a member and chairman of the German government's scientific advisory board in Bonn. Many of his students owe their important function in the German agricultural administration, the European Union, the FAO as well as science and industry to his strict Prussian, but always humane guidance and leadership.

Plate was awarded the Justus von Liebig Prize in 1960 ; In 1972 he received his honorary doctorate for Dr. hc from the University of Göttingen , 1973 the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
