Arthur Nussbaum 1898

Arthur Nussbaum , originally Nussbaum , (born January 31, 1877 in Berlin , † November 22, 1964 in New York City , New York ) was a German- born American lawyer of Jewish descent.

Life

After graduating from high school, Arthur Nussbaum studied law in Berlin for three years from 1894 to 1897 , received his doctorate in 1898 and practiced the profession of lawyer for a few years after passing the assessor examination . In addition, he wrote numerous legal books and articles. After acquiring the Venia legendi , he taught commercial , banking and stock exchange law at Berlin University from 1914 . From 1921 until his dismissal in 1933 due to the National Socialist Professional Civil Service Act, he taught and researched there as an associate professor . His colleagues James Goldschmidt , Martin Wolff , Ernst Rabel , Fritz Schulz , Julius Flechtheim , Max Rheinstein , Julius Magnus and Max Alsberg also suffered a similar fate . Until 1934 he was still a member of the editorial team of the civil law journal Archiv für die civilistische Praxis (AcP).

Arthur Nussbaum was a member of the main board of the Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith .

In 1934 he had to emigrate to the USA because of the National Socialist racial policy and taught at Columbia University from 1934 to 1951 , from 1939 with a research professorship . He received US citizenship in 1940.

Honor

There is a Berlin memorial plaque for him in the entrance to the Law Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin .
