Arthur William Tedder, 1st Baron Tedder , GCB , (born July 11, 1890 in Glengoyne , Stirlingshire , † June 3, 1967 in Banstead , Surrey ), was a British Air Force officer ( Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force ) in the first half 20th century and most recently Commander in Chief of the RAF with the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force .

Life

Tedder was born in Glengoyne in Stirlingshire, Scotland , and attended Magdalene College at Cambridge University .

In the First World War he served on the Western Front , from 1916 in the Royal Flying Corps , where he reached the position of squadron captain and the rank of major . In the new Royal Air Force he was promoted to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel in 1918 and last commanded a squadron in the Middle East. In the interwar period he completed courses at the Royal Naval College and Imperial Defense College and rose to Director of Training in 1934 and Air Officer Commanding, RAF Far East in 1936 . At the beginning of the Second World War , he was Director General for Research in the Ministry of the Air Force .

From 1941 to 1942, Tedder commanded the RAF Middle East Command units in North Africa , which supported the 8th Army of Montgomery . In 1943 he became commander in chief of all allied air forces in the Mediterranean region. In January of the following year he was appointed as Dwight D. Eisenhower's deputy in the invasion of Normandy , but without really having any significant influence. This also led to wrangling over competencies with the Commander in Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Forces Trafford Leigh-Mallory . Tedder signed the German surrender of Berlin-Karlshorst in May 1945 on behalf of Eisenhower.

After the end of the war, Tedder was promoted to Marshal of the Royal Air Force and served from 1946 to the end of 1949 as the successor to Charles Portal as Chief of the Air Staff and thus Commander in Chief of the Royal Air Force.

After his retirement he was, among other things, Vice Chairman of the BBC Board of Governors and Chancellor of Cambridge University.
