Life

The name Arthur Wilkens first appeared in the personnel news of various art magazines at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1908 he and the painter Ernst Toepfer from Wiesbaden were awarded a scholarship from the Hermann Günther Foundation. He won the 1910 competition for the Michael Beerschen Foundation scholarships, which were linked to a one-year study visit to Italy , together with the painter Eugen Hersch (1887–1967) from Charlottenburg. The following year the Hermann Günther Foundation in Berlin awarded him another scholarship, this time together with the Hamburg painter Richard Fubry. Arthur Wilken was living in Berlin at the time, which indicates that he was studying at the Royal Academy of Arts . With the scholarships, Wilken stayed at the Villa Strohl-Fern in Rome in 1911/1912 .

On December 8, 1914, he married the widow Elisabeth Margareta Ernst, née Kurschinski. During the First World War he served as a non-commissioned officer in the 4th Company of the Guards Landsturm Battalion Dennewitz and died in 1918 in the military hospital at No. 680 at Schloß.

Works

The works known by Arthur Wilken were created between 1900 and 1915 and can mostly only be found in the exhibition catalogs of the time. From 1907 to 1914 Wilken exhibited his work regularly at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition , and in 1914 also at the First International Graphic Art Exhibition in Leipzig. His lithographs hung here next to such celebrities as Max Klinger , Max Liebermann , Emil Orlik , Max Slevogt and Edvard Munch . A few sheets were sold at auctions in the past.
