Artur Klinau (* 1965 in Minsk ; Belarusian: Артур Клінаў / Artur Klinaŭ, rarely also Russian: Артур Клинов / Artur Klinov) is a Belarusian artist, writer and editor.

Life

Artur Klinau was born in Minsk in 1965. He was already active as an artist while studying architecture, which he completed in 1987. His works have been exhibited in several European countries. He lives and works in Minsk. Since 1998 he has been chairman of the Belarus Association of Contemporary Art and since 2001 publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine pARTisan. From July to August 2011 he spent four weeks in the LiteraturRaum in Berlin, where he worked on his new novel.

Klinau is critical of the Aljaksandr Lukashenkas regime and advocates a western orientation of the country:

Minsk - "Palace of State Security"

The first work by Klinau to have appeared in German is the book “Minsk. Sun city of dreams ”. This essay combines the characteristics of a travel guide with autobiographical elements. It is a stroll through the "Sun City", the center of the Belarusian capital with its palaces from the 1930s to 1950s in the style of the " Stalin Empire ", as well as their much less representative backyards. The reader gets to know the basics of Belarusian history from the beginnings in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania through the Soviet era to the present, learns about the many times the city was destroyed, such as in the Second World War, so that little of old Minsk has survived :

“The fact that the sun city became flesh in Minsk was not a whim of history. The city, which began its history as a cemetery - with the bloody banks of the Njamiha - became the cemetery for dead cities. Several Minsks were born and turned to dust on their territory. In its history, the city was sometimes Catholic, sometimes Orthodox, sometimes Jewish, sometimes Baroque, sometimes a governorate city, sometimes a Soviet, sometimes an imperial city. After each death, the city did not rise again in continuation of the tradition, but as a completely different city that had nothing in common with the previous one, neither in terms of aesthetics nor in the everyday world, the mythology of its inhabitants. "

In contrast, there is the Lithuanian capital Vilnius , which has been able to retain its old character. Klinau plays with names: It begins with Minsk, the center of which becomes the “city of the sun”, he calls the Soviet Union the “land of happiness”. He also changes street names, for example “Oktoberplatz” becomes “Platz des Metaphysikus”. He does not name politicians, but gives them names such as “Metaphysicus”, “Wisdom” or “Love”.

The book was written in Russian in the months after the presidential elections in Belarus in 2006 on behalf of the Suhrkamp publishing house. The original title is “Putevoditel 'po gorodu solnca” (travel guide through the sunny city) and is based on a Belarusian-language essay on Klinau's photo album “Horad SONca. Vizual'naja paėma pra Minsk ”. Accordingly, several photos of the author and a city map as an orientation aid belong to the book.

The text was translated by Volker Weichsel. The title of the work is a reference to “ La città del Sole ” by the Italian philosopher and Dominican monk Tommaso Campanella , which appeared in German as “Die Sonnenstadt” or “Der Sonnenstaat”. He also plays with the similarity of the words “son” (dream) and “solnce” (sun) in Russian.

Klinau is also the editor-in-chief and publisher of the pARTisan magazine, which has been published in Belarusian, Russian and English since 2002. It is the only magazine devoted to contemporary Belarusian culture. Each issue has a theme, such as “Minsk Underground” or “Dostoevsky”. In addition to Klinau, other Belarusian writers are involved in the project, such as Ihar Babkou and Valentin Akudowitsch . Central texts from pARTisan editions from 2002–2013 are contained in German translation in the volume "PARTISANEN. Kultur_Macht_Belarus" (Berlin 2014).
