He was world champion in 1991 and winner of the silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in the heavyweight division.

Career

Artur Akoyev began lifting weights as a teenager, trained by his father, Vladimir Akoyev. He was one of the relatively few Ossetians who practiced this sport, because wrestling is the number one sport in this North Caucasian region.

Even as a junior, he performed very well. In 1983 he became Junior Champion of the RSFSR in Grozny and in 1985 Junior Champion of the USSR in the 2nd heavyweight division with a duel of 405 kg (185 kg in snatch and 220 kg in push). In 1986 he was used at the Junior World Championships in Donaueschingen and won there with the same performance in front of his compatriot Juri Youk, who achieved 380 kg. Shortly before the end of 1986, he set a new junior world record in snatching at 196 kg.

In his first senior year in 1987, he started at the European Championships in Reims . He reached 430 kg (195 kg - 235 kg) in the 2nd heavyweight and only had to face the two exceptional lifters Yuri Sakharevich from the USSR , who achieved 440 kg and Stefan Botew from Bulgaria , who came to 430 kg but was a little lighter, bow.

After this successful start to his weightlifting career, it was suddenly interrupted when he was convicted of doping with anabolic steroids and was banned for two years. For this reason he was unable to compete in 1988 and 1989.

In 1990 he returned to the lifting platform and took second place in the heavyweight championship of the Soviet Union with 417.5 kg (190-227.5 kg) behind Alexander Popov , 425 kg. At the World Championships in Budapest he was briefly used for the injured Aljaksandr Kurlowitsch in the super heavyweight division and, not optimally prepared, took 2nd place with an output of 390 kg (170 kg - 220 kg), from which he benefited from being next to Kurlowitsch other strong super heavyweights, such as B. Manfred Nerlinger from Germany, missing due to injury.

1991 turned out to be the most successful year in Artur Akoyev's career. He was first in Władysławowo European champion in the 2nd heavyweight, where he achieved 420 kg (185 kg - 235 kg) in a duel. At the 1991 World Championships in Donaueschingen he met Ronny Weller from Germany for the first time and was able to relegate him to 2nd place with an output of 427.5 kg (195 kg - 232.5 kg). Ronny Weller achieved 420 kg (190 kg - 230 kg).

In 1992 Artur Akojew and Ronny Weller met again at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in the 2nd heavyweight division. This time, Ronny Weller won, who was behind Akojew after the break with 192.5 kg, who tore 195 kg, but lifted 5 kg more than Akojew with 240 kg, so that this duel with 432.5 kg to 430 kg In favor of Ronny Weller went out. Artur Akojew thus won the Olympic silver medal .

In 1993 Artur Akojew was absent from the international championships due to injury. In 1994, however, he made a comeback, because he was the third winner at the 1994 World Cup in Istanbul with 420 kg (195 kg - 225 kg) in the 2nd heavyweight division behind his Ossetian compatriot Tymur Tajmasow , who competed for the Ukraine , and the 435 kg and behind Nicu Vlad from Romania , who came to 422.5 kg. Ronny Weller was promoted to super heavyweight in 1993.

After that Artur Akojew started in no more international championships. He earns his living as a state employee.
