Arvid Emil Fladmoe (born May 8, 1915 in Kristiania , † November 18, 1993 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian violinist, conductor and music teacher.

Life

Fladmoe started playing the violin at the age of eight. He received basic training from Henrik Adam Due and studied with Carl Flesch at the Royal Academy of Music in London . On his return he took lessons from Max Rostal , who was concertmaster of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1927-28. At the age of twelve he became a member and at eighteen he became conductor of the KFUM ( Kristelig Forening for Unge Menn ) orchestra Arioso .

He made his debut as a violin soloist in 1933, accompanied by Mary Barratt Due , his future mother-in-law, in the auditorium of the University of Oslo with a program of works by Edvard Grieg , Henryk Wieniawski , Pablo de Sarasate and Max Bruch . From 1938 to 1940 he was concertmaster of the orchestra of the music society Harmonie in Bergen, where he also worked with the Hungarian violist István Ipolyi . In 1940 he gave a concert in Oslo with his fiancée Esther Barratt-Due . During the war, he mainly appeared in private chamber music events at the Barratt Due Music Institute , where he also taught.

From 1946 Fladmoe was concertmaster at the Nationaltheatret , where he conducted a major Carmen production in 1948 . From the end of 1948 to 1950 he was the conductor of the Trondheim Symfoniorkester . After a successful performance of La Traviata , he got a permanent position at the Nationaltheatret in 1950 , where he stayed until the orchestra was dissolved in 1958.

In 1959 he became conductor of the orchestra of the music society Harmonie in Bergen. When Odd Grüner-Hegge became chief conductor at the Norske Opera in 1961 , he brought him to his orchestra as first conductor. Here he was responsible for opera productions such as Anne Pedersdotter by Edvard Fliflet Bræin and Wozzeck by Alban Berg , but also conducted operettas such as Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow .

Since it was founded in 1973, Fladmoe has taught conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music , and from 1983 he was a professor there. In 1973 he was made a Knight of the Order of Saint Olav and was also honored with the Royal Medal of Merit ( Kongens fortjenstmedalje ) in gold.
