Mary Barratt Due

Mary Louise Barratt Due (born April 9, 1888 in Bergen , † December 24, 1969 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian pianist and music teacher.

Life

The daughter of the Methodist preacher Thomas Ball Barratt was admitted to the Kristiania Music Conservatory at the age of ten and studied from 1902 to 1907 at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia , where Giovanni Sgambati was her piano teacher. She gave her successful debut concert in Kristiania in 1906.

In addition to her extensive concert activities , she continued her musical training with Percy Grainger in London from 1911–12 . In 1916 she married the violinist Henrik Adam Due , with whom she had numerous appearances throughout Norway and in 1927 founded the Barratt Due Music Institute . In addition to teaching at this institute, which also included a musical kindergarten and which became a cultural center of Norway during the Second World War, she also continued her activities as a concert pianist. So she played the world premiere of Signe Lund's piano concerto at the concert to mark her twenty-five year anniversary .

As part of the Fulbright program , Barratt Due traveled to the United States in 1956 to study music there at schools and universities.
