Arys ( Kazakh and Russian Арыс ) is a city in southern Kazakhstan .

geography

The city is located on the Arys River in the Turkistan region 79 km northwest of Shymkent .

history

The place was founded in 1900 as a settlement on the Trans-Aral Railway . In 1956 Arys was granted city rights.

In March 2009 there was an explosion on the premises of an ammunition disposal company in which three people were killed and 17 injured. On June 26, 2014, another major explosion occurred in the city, killing two people.

On June 24, 2019, there were several serious explosions in a military ammunition dump near Arys. The explosions lasted a total of four days and prompted authorities to evacuate the city completely. A total of four people were killed and 85 percent of all buildings in Arys were damaged.

The Turkestan-Siberian Railway (Turksib) coming from Novosibirsk joins the Trans-Aral Railway , which runs from Orenburg in Russia to Tashkent in Uzbekistan , at Arys main station ( Arys 1 ) .
