The Arys ( Russian Арыс, Арысь ) is a right tributary of the Syr Darya in Kazakhstan Province Turkestan .
The Arys rises in Talas-Alatau . From there it flows in a predominantly westerly direction through a desert plain between the Qaratau in the north and the Talas-Alatau in the south. It takes in the tributaries Aqsu , Maschat and Badam from the left, and Boraldai from the right. At the city of the same name, Arys , it turns to the northwest and flows into the Syrdarja after 378 km on the right. The Arys drains an area of 14,900 km². At Arys the river has a mean discharge (MQ) of 46.6 m³ / s. In April the Arys has the largest amount of water, in August the least. Some of the Arys water is diverted for irrigation .
