Ascan Lutteroth (painter)
Ascan Lutteroth (born October 5, 1842 in Hamburg ; † February 2, 1923 there ) was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School of Painting .
Life
Ascan Lutteroth was a grandson of Hamburg Senator Ascan Wilhelm Lutteroth and son of the banker Christian Alexander Ascan Lutteroth and Sophie Friederike Lutteroth. From 1861 he studied with Alexandre Calame in Geneva and from 1864 to 1867 with Oswald Achenbach at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He spent 1868 to 1870 in Italy, including on Capri, and then lived in Berlin until 1877. On March 10, 1872, he married the daughter of a merchant, Elisabeth Warnecke. In 1877 Lutteroth returned to his hometown Hamburg. Here he painted three large pictures for the town hall in 1887. Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm and Crown Princess Victoria held him in high regard. In 1879 they took him on their trip to San Remo . Lutteroth also acted as the teacher of the Crown Princess, who was also painting. The picture Street by the Sea in Pegli near Genoa was available in two versions, one by Victoria, one by Lutteroth. In 1890 Wilhelm II awarded him the title of professor. Alongside Valentin Ruths, he is considered the most important Hamburg landscape painter of his time. Until 1909 he was chairman of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .
Ascan Lutteroth was buried on the grave of his family in the Ohlsdorf cemetery , grid square AA 10.

Lutteroth mainly painted landscapes from Italy and the Hamburg area, but also alpine and forest scenes, sparsely populated with small figures. In his early days, like Achenbach, he mainly painted Italian scenes, which are characterized by bright colors and light contrasts. But the drama of an Achenbach did not suit him. His motifs are calmer and sweeter.
Since the 1890s he mainly painted the motifs from the area around Hamburg. From the French Impressionists he adopted the light-flooded expression and the choice of unspectacular motifs, but without adopting their painting style.
His works were represented in important national and international exhibitions and hung, among others, in the Berlin National Gallery , in the Rudolfinum Prague and in the Gemäldegalerie Magdeburg before the preference of modern painters moved many museums to submit or store his pictures. Today the Hamburger Kunsthalle , the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie Dessau in Schloss Georgium , the Museumsberg Flensburg , the Städtische Galerie Rosenheim and the Museum Villingen-Schwenningen still have pictures of him.
In Boetticher's 1891 reference work, 91 paintings and 32 watercolors can be found.
In the Leipzig Museum there was a painting depicting the Mawensi (eastern summit of Kilimanjaro ), which Lutteroth created in 1889 for his father Herrmann Julius Meyer ( publisher , editor of Meyer's Konversations-Lexikon ) based on models by the African traveler and researcher Hans Meyer ( Africa researcher ) . The size was 149 x 250 cm. J. Meyer donated the picture to the Leipzig Museum in 1890. The work has been missing since the Second World War .
