Ash Hollow State Historical Park is a state park in Garden County in the US state of Nebraska .
description
Established in 1962, the state park is located on both sides of US Highway 26 a few kilometers south of Lewellen in Ash Hollow , a valley that leads north to the North Platte River . The park has an area of 405 hectares and consists of two parts, which are about 4 km apart and surround the two main attractions of the park: Windlass Hill and Ash Hollow Cave.
Windlass Hill
Windlass Hill ( location ) is where the Oregon Trail , the historic 19th century settlers walk west, came across Ash Hollow from a plateau . The valley, whose ash forest provided shade and in which there was grass for the cattle and fresh spring water, was a popular resting place for the settlers.
To get down, the covered wagons had to be lowered down a slope that was about 25 degrees steep and a hundred meters deep, mostly with the help of ropes. The place was particularly suitable because there were no steep rocks here. The wagons left deep tracks in the slope that can still be seen today.
The origin of the name “Windlass Hill” is unknown, the settlers mostly called the place “the steep hill”.
Ash Hollow Cave
The Ash Hollow Cave ( location ) is a semi-cave in a rock wall on the edge of the Ash Hollow . For about 3000 years it has served various Indian cultures as a place of refuge for hunting and foraging. These include late Archaic cultures (1000 BC to 500 AD), Woodland cultures (0–1100), Central Plains cultures (900–1450) and the prehistoric Apaches (1675–1725).
Objects from these cultures were found in excavations up to 2 m deep in the cave floor. They are on display in the park's visitor center nearby.
In July 1964, the Ash Hollow Cave was classified as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) and as such was entered on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1966 .
Trivia
- The Battle of Blue Water Creek (1855) is also known as the Battle of Ash Hollow , although it took place a few kilometers northwest of Ash Hollow on Blue Water Creek on the north side of the North Platte River . General Harney, however, camped with his troops in Ash Hollow before the battle and moved from there to Blue Water Creek.
- The Ash Hollow Formation , a lithostratigraphic formation in central North America , is named after the Ash Hollow .
