action

17-year-old Ed moves from Oregon to Virginia with his mother June. At his new high school, Ed is supposed to write an essay about an old fellow and befriends his neighbor Ashby. Ed supports Ashby by driving him around. Ed soon realizes that Ashby has a past as a CIA contract killer for the government, but is no longer taking on assignments. The two get to know each other better through conversations and Ashby supports Ed in his youthful development.

Ed gets accepted into the football team at his new high school and thereby manages to get rid of his underdog role. A friendship develops with his classmate Eloise. The relationship with his father, on the other hand, does not go as desired, as he does not have the time to visit his son. His mother, on the other hand, constantly tries to get to know a new husband and partner.

When Ashby learns that one of his last contract killings was not a government service, but has given three acquaintances a financial advantage, he decides to kill these three in revenge. When Ashby Ed confesses the latest two murders, he tells him, among other things, that he has only a few weeks to live because of a brain tumor. Ashby promises Ed not to commit the final murder as planned.

Instead, Ashby himself is shot by hired killers, he leaves Ed his car, with which he was always chauffeured.

The film premiered on April 19, 2015 at the Tribeca Film Festival , and the US theatrical release followed on September 25, 2015. In Germany and Austria, the film was not shown in theaters. It was only released via streaming and downloading. Services.

criticism

The US reviews for this film were mostly negative, as Dennis Harvey described John McNamara's second directorial work on Variety .com as a “poorly mixed bowl full of incompatible ingredients - lukewarm, quickly digested and forgotten.” Stefan Seidl from Actionfreunde.de However, it is entirely of the opinion that the director "created a likeable, well - cast, well-crafted, various classic-proven messages as well as inspired dialogues showing ' coming-of-age ' drama".
