The Ashville / Tacoma- class was a series of warships built for the United States Navy during World War II .
Technology and history
It consisted of 77 patrol frigates (US Navy identification: PF = Patrol Frigate). These ships are corvettes in terms of their size , but in the American naming scheme they were part of the patrol boats. These units were built between 1942 and 1944. They served as escorts for convoys during World War II and were mainly used for anti -submarine hunting , but also for air defense.
The type ships of this class were the Asheville , which was launched on August 22, 1942 and put into service on December 1, 1942, and the Tacoma . The type ship of the 2nd half class, Tacoma , was launched on July 7, 1943 and was put into service on November 6, 1943. The ships of the Ashville / Tacoma class had piston engines as their drive, which drove two propeller shafts. The ships and their components were prefabricated in various factories and then assembled in the shipyard.
Hull numbers
A total of 77 Ashville / Tacoma class ships were delivered to the United States Navy. The ships were built in series, with these being delivered in blocks. The following table illustrates this procedure.
