Maulana (Master) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (born August 19, 1863 in Thana Bhawan , Uttar Pradesh , † 1943 ; also known as Hakeem-ul-Ummat [ The Wise One of the Muslim Community or The Teacher of Teachers ]) was a well-known scholar of Islam . He came from the Sunni- Orthodox Dar ul-Ulum Deoband .

He wrote about 1,365 books on various areas of Islam. He was considered a specialist in hadith science and Hanafi law .

Thanwi was known for his numerous criticisms of the practices of the Sufis and the Shia . He wrote a number of works on it, for example the Hifzul Iman (" Protection of Faith"), in which he widespread prayers at graves among the Muslims of South Asia or even the (alleged) worship of graves as well as asking for intercession from prophets and saints and other people condemned. Furthermore, he rejected the opinion of the Barelwi Sufis that Mohammed continued to exist in the form of "light". He further describes these practices and beliefs as kufr (un-Islamic), shirk (polytheistic) and bidʿa (heretical). In response, he was in a fatwa of Barelvi scholars -Sufi Ahmed Raza Khan from 1900, along with other Deobandi - Ulema declared infidels, as they empfänden example, lack of "Love for the Prophet", have thus committed the Prophet insulted and kufr should. Likewise, all people who do not declare the Deobandis to be unbelievers ( speak the takfīr ) and evaluate them accordingly are also unbelievers. In the fatwa he is compared to Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab , Ibn Taimiyya and Mirza Ghulam Ahmad .
