Ashton Hilliard Williams (born August 15, 1891 in Lake City , South Carolina , † February 25, 1962 ) was an American lawyer and politician of the Democratic Party .

Life

Williams studied at the University of South Carolina , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1912 . At the Law School of Georgetown University he received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1915 . Williams practiced now until 1952 as a lawyer in South Carolina. At the same time he was also politically active. He was a member of the Lake City council from 1916 and 1917, served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1921 to 1922, and was a Senator in the South Carolina Senate from 1923 to 1926 . From 1948 to 1949 he was a representative of the state of South Carolina on the Democratic National Executive Committee .

On June 17, 1952, President Harry S. Truman nominated him to be a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of South Carolina to fill the vacant seat of Judge Julius Waties Waring . On July 2, 1952, he was confirmed by the United States Senate. He was sworn in on July 3. Williams has held this judge post until his death on 25 February 1962. His vacant seat was junior Charles Earl Simons filled.
