The striped fern family (Aspleniaceae) are a family of the division of the ferns (Polypodiophyta).

features

The striped fern family got its name because of the sori arranged in strips or lines along the longitudinal nerves of the leaves . The spores are always bean-shaped. However, some species do not only reproduce via spores, but also vegetatively via brood buds .

Most strip ferns have relatively poorly articulated, feathered or simply pinnate leaves. The leaf blade is often quite coarse even in the tropical species. The size of the leaves varies widely (between a few centimeters and 2 meters), but most species are relatively small.

Occurrence

Spleen fern ( Asplenium ceterach)
Nest fern ( Asplenium nidus )
Wall rue ( Asplenium ruta-muraria )
Brown-stalked striped fern ( Asplenium trichomanes )

Most of the striped fern family live in the tropics . Compared to other fern groups, however, there are also relatively many representatives in the temperate or cooler latitudes.

They are predominantly perennial epiphytic plants or plants that live on rocks.

Systematics

Of the 700 species, 22 occur in Europe and 12 in Germany . This makes this family the most species-rich fern family in Europe.

Depending on the opinion of individual authors, the family comprises 1 to 10 genera , although around 95% of the species belong to the genus striped ferns ( Asplenium ):

The genus Hymenasplenium Hayata has a different chromosome number and different root characteristics, which is why it is regarded as a sister group of all others (see below) and the genus character is not in doubt.

Smith et al. (2006) assume that the following genera would have to be integrated into Asplenium :

  • Antigramma C. Presl
  • Camptosorus Link
  • Ceterach Willd.
  • Diellia Brackenr.
  • Holodictyum Maxon
  • Loxoscaphe T. Moore
  • Phyllitis Hill
  • Pleurosorus Fée
  • Schaffneria Fée ex T. Moore
  • Sinephropteris Mickel
  • Thamnopteris C. Presl
