Astolfo de Maria

Astolfo de Maria (born August 16, 1891 in Rome ; died January 3, 1946 in Venice ) was an Italian painter.
Life
Astolfo de Maria was a son of Emilia Voight, who came from Bremen , where the family often went, and of the painter Mario de Maria , who came from a family of artists. In 1892 the family moved to Venice. He learned painting from his father. When Italy entered the war in 1915, he became a soldier and served in the environment of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio as a motorcyclist and war illustrator. After the war he painted with Bartolo Sacchi and Guido Cadorin on the frescoes of the churches in Col San Martino (Treviso) and Moriago della Battaglia that were destroyed in the World War .
He had his first exhibition in 1920 at the Biennale di Venezia , at which he also exhibited regularly in subsequent years. In the 1930s he had exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Kassel, Cologne, Riga and Helsinki. In 1942 he furnished a hall with eighteen paintings at the Biennale.
In 1926 he organized a posthumous exhibition for his father, who died in 1924, as part of the Biennale.
Astolfo de Maria was a fresco painter, illustrator, commercial artist and art critic. He took up various currents in art and was at times a representative of Italian magical realism.
