Astrablau (also Basic Blue 140 ) belongs to the group of phthalocyanine dyes and is required , among other things, in microscopy for staining unwooded cell walls . It is a cationic , water-soluble dye that contains copper as its central atom . Astra blue colors mainly acidic mucopolysaccharides .

Astra blue can be used together with safranin in a double coloration of herbal preparations, whereby safranin colors lignified cell walls red, while unwooded cell walls are given a blue coloring by astrab blue. It is also used in pathology and cell biology to stain certain tumors and to differentiate between mast cells in the mucous membrane and connective tissue .
