Astyanacinus is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae). Astyanacinus species occur from the catchment area of the upper Río Paraguay over that of the upper Rio Madeira to the Río Magdalena in Colombia.
features
Astyanacinus species are 8 to 14 cm long and have a laterally flattened, moderately high-backed body, similar to the closely related genus Astyanax . Astyanacinus can be distinguished from other tetra genera based on the drawing. Characteristic are a dark "shoulder spot", a centrally located side line, which consists of individual angular elements and a horizontally lying, oval spot on the caudal peduncle, which extends to the central rays of the caudal fin. Another diagnostic feature of the genus is the long anal fin supported by 25 to 36 branched fin rays .
