The Onur Anıtı , in German Monument of Honor , in Ataturk Park in the İlkadım district of the Turkish port city of Samsun, is dedicated to the landing of the founder of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , in Samsun on May 19, 1919 as the start of the Turkish Liberation War . It bears an equestrian statue of Ataturk, which was designed by the Austrian architect Heinrich Krippel . The monument is the symbol of the city of Samsun and is depicted both on the city coat of arms and on the coat of arms of the Samsunspor sports club .

history

The equestrian statue of Mustafâ Kemâl Pascha was commissioned in 1927 by the provincial governor of Samsun , Kâzım Pascha , from the Austrian artist and sculptor Heinrich Krippel; he had won the art competition for the victory monument in Ankara , which Ataturk depicted sitting on a horse. The production of the bronze statue took place in Vienna from 1928 to 1931 . The statue was placed on its pedestal in Samsun on October 29, 1931, Republic Day . The memorial was officially inaugurated on January 15, 1932. It was the thirteenth monument to the Turkish founder and chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and Krippel's fourth work of art in Turkey.

The total bronze statue is 4.75 meters high, while the entire monument is 8.85 meters high. In addition to the artist's salary of $ 5,500, the memorial cost $ 37,000 to build.

The casting of the bronze statue was carried out by the United Metalworks in Austria. The statue was shipped in 32 individual parts, packed in boxes, with the general cargo ship DS  Nicea of the German Levante Line from Hamburg to Turkey and arrived in Samsun on October 15, 1931.
