The Athabasca Pass is a mountain pass in the Canadian Rockies . It is located in Jasper National Park in the province of Alberta near the border with British Columbia . The pass height is 1753  m and enables the crossing of the North American continental watershed . Further south it is possible to cross the Canadian Rocky Mountains via Yellowhead Pass and north via Howse Pass . The pass is flanked by Mount Brown ( 2799  m ) and McGillivray Ridge ( 2697  m ), both of which are covered by ice fields.

history

The passport was known to the First Nations resident here for a long time and was used by them. David Thompson was the first white man to cross the pass in 1811. The North West Company's York Factory Express later had to cross the pass between the trading centers in Ruperts Land to the east and the Columbia District to the west. It was on the section between the boat landing site (which the North West Company only called "Boat Encampment") on the Columbia River , north of Revelstoke and Jasper House .

Because of its importance as part of the main fur trade route from the Columbia District to Canada, the pass was declared a National Historic Site of Canada on May 27, 1971 by the Canadian government .
