Athanasius Merkle

Athanasius Merkle OCist (born May 16, 1888 in Bayersried , † June 5, 1980 in Itaporanga ) was abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Itaporanga .

Life

Athanasius Ludwig Merkle entered the Trappist Abbey of Marija-Zvijezda in 1905 and became a priest in 1913. Since he could not return to Bosnia after the First World War , he and Vitus Recke were among the founders of the Himmerod Monastery in 1921 . Sent to Brazil in 1934 , he founded the Itaporanga Monastery there in 1936 at the invitation of Bishop José Carlos de Aguirre (1880–1973). In 1950 he became abbot there and began building the church in 1959. He gave up at the age of 83 and spent the last years of his life in Brazil, where he died in 1980 at the age of 93.
