Atherton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan , Greater Manchester , England , with 19,859 inhabitants (2001). It is a former industrial site for coal mining , cotton processing and nail production .

history

St John's Church

In the area of Atherton were Roman Celtic coins and traces of a Roman road and a settlement from the Bronze Age found. The area has long been known for coal mining and the manufacture of nails. In the 19th century Atherton was a township in the Parish of Leigh with the village of Chowbent as its center. During the industrial revolution , the cotton industry established itself in this place. The city that emerged from the population growth was called Atherton. The name Chowbent is still used occasionally by the locals. There are a number of significant historic buildings in and around Atherton, including the 17th century Alder House , Chowbent Chapel from 1722, and St John's Church from 1879.

Geography and traffic

Atherton is traversed by seven streams . The city has a pedestrian zone with small, independent shops. It is connected by rail to Wigan and Manchester and by bus routes to Bolton , Leigh, Wigan, St Helens , Manchester, the Trafford Center and the Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Complex .

Leisure and culture

There are many pubs along Atherton's main drag, Market Street . The city has an active night life. Every last week of January there is a beer festival in Formby Hall .
