The women's football department of the Atlético Mineiro club from Belo Horizonte was first founded in 1983 and revived in 2005 and 2019.

history

On the occasion of the first edition of the Taça Brasil de Futebol Feminino in 1983 Atlético had set up a women's team for the first time, with which he reached the final of this competition the following year, but was inferior to the EC Radar . After taking part in this competition for the third time in 1985, the club disbanded the team. Only 20 years later, at the start of the state championship for women in Minas Gerais , Atlético returned with a new team and took over the sporting dominance in the state in the following years. From the talent factory of the club at that phase emerged among others the goal scorer Millene . A lack of spectator interest and financial considerations led the club to withdraw from women's football again in spring 2013.

In spring 2019 Atlético started the third attempt to establish a women's team. Above all, this should also meet the criteria of the South American continental association CONMEBOL , which will apply from that year , according to which in future a women's team will be required by the clubs to participate in the men's edition of the Copa Libertadores . To build a new team, the club entered into a partnership with the local amateur club Prointer FC , which has been continuously active in women's football over the past few years. The club's own training center "Cidade do Galo" serves as the home ground. The new team started their game operations with a test match in the women's first Mineiro classic against local rivals América Mineiro (Coelho / Rabbit versus Galo / Hahn) on March 23, 2019 in the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto , where the rooster (Atlético) beats the rabbit ( América) lost 3-0.
