Atractotomus magnicornis is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 2.8 to 3.4 millimeters long. The genus Atractotomus includes dark-colored species in which the top of the body is covered with flattened, golden or silver hair. The second antenna segment is often very thickened. In Atractotomus magnicornis the first antennae is cylindrical and the second is only thickened in females. Atractotomus parvulus is very similar, but has a slightly shorter second antennae and also has a different host plant.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed throughout Europe and is only absent here in the southern Mediterranean area. It was introduced into North America by humans. In Germany the species is widespread and common and occurs in the lowlands as well as in the high mountain ranges and in the Alps. In Austria, the species has so far hardly been detected and is rarer in the lower regions in the east than in the Alps.

Way of life

Like Atractotomus kolenatii, the bugs live mainly on Norway spruce ( Picea abies ), they are rarely found on other conifers such as spruce ( Abies ), pine ( Pinus ), larch ( Larix ) and even on common juniper ( Juniperus communis ) and arborvitae ( Thuja ). They feed on zoophytophagus, both by sucking on the needles and buds of their host trees, as well as on aphids and dust lice . The adult bugs can be seen from late June to September. They occur in one generation per year.
