The genus name Attagenus from ancient Gr. ατταγήν attagēn, means "hazel grouse". The genus is represented in Europe with 41 species .

features

The elongated oval beetles are 3–4 mm in size. The basic color of the beetles is black, the wing covers are red-brown. The base of the pronotum is covered with thick yellow-gray hair. The species has its distribution center in the western Mediterranean area. There it occurs on the Iberian Peninsula , in southern France and in Italy, on the Balkan Peninsula (Croatia) and in North Africa. The species is particularly common in Spain and southern France. In the east, the occurrence extends to the Middle East . In Central Europe, the species occurs in Alsace , where it was presumably introduced.

Way of life

The beetles feed on pollen. The beetles can be observed in summer on the flowers of various umbellifers and daisy family , including yarrow ( Achillea ), wild carrot ( Daucus carota ), meadow marguerite ( Leucanthemum vulgare ) and real hairline ( Peucedanum officinale ) as well as the holy herb ( Santolina) ).
