In the attack on the Italicus Express on August 4, 1974, 12 people were killed and 48 were injured in a bomb attack .

The train

The Italicus Express ran as a night express train on the Rome - Munich connection and was operated in Italy by Ferrovie dello Stato .

The attack

Piero Malentacchi, a member of Mario Tuti's terrorist cell , hid a bomb in the fifth car of the train at Firenze Santa Maria Novella station . This was done on behalf of the Fronte Nazionale Rivoluzionario and the Ordine Nuovo , two right-wing extremist organizations. The explosion occurred at 1:23 when the train passed the San Benedetto Val di Sambro station on the Bologna – Florence line .

consequences

12 people died and 48 were also injured. Former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro had used the train as a passenger , but had got off the train at the time the attack occurred.

After the police authorities learned of the alleged perpetrators through informants, they tried to arrest Mario Tuti on January 24, 1975 . He shot two policemen, seriously injured another and was able to escape to France . The criminal proceedings against him were therefore opened in his absence. On July 27, 1975, after a shooting with the French police, he was arrested and extradited to Italy. In the first instance he was sentenced to 20 years ' imprisonment , on appeal he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The Court of Cassation rejected the judgment. Tuti was acquitted in the follow-up trial for lack of evidence .
