Aubrey Burl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harry Aubrey Woodruff Burl (born September 24, 1926 in London , † April 8, 2020 in Birmingham) was a British prehistorian .

Life

Aubrey Burl was the son of Harry Burl, an engineer, and his wife Lily Wright. In 1944 he was drafted into the Royal Navy, which he left as a second lieutenant.

Burl studied at the University of London and received his master's degree from the University of Leicester in 1970 with a thesis on prehistoric stone circles . He was a lecturer in archeology at Hull College in Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire from 1970 to 1980 . His first marriage was to the teacher Olwen Hughes, their son was Christopher Burl. In 1966 he married Margaret Mary O'Neil; the marriage sprang up the son Geoffrey. Since 1980 he lived in Birmingham , where he married Judith Lawson, an administrative clerk at the local university . He spent the last years of his life in a nursing home.

Burl mainly worked on stone circles and other megalithic monuments of the British Neolithic and published numerous books on stone circles whose chronological order he wanted to read off their shape. His idiosyncratic use of 14 C data often makes it difficult to follow his arguments.

He also published historical biographies, including about Shakespeare and the Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts .

Memberships and honors

Burl was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London and an honorary member of the Scottish Society of Antiquaries . In 1998 he received a commemorative publication .
