Zuzana Števulová (* 24. July 1983 in Martin , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak lawyer and human rights - activist . She was director of the non-governmental organization Human Rights League for ten years and received the United States Department of State's International Women of Courage Award in 2016 .

Life

Števulová comes from Martin in central Slovakia . She studied law at the Law Faculty of Trnava University . Her focus was on humanitarian and international law as well as the protection of refugees .

Števulová worked as a lawyer for the Slovak Human Rights League (HRL) from 2005 to 2019 , where she was director since 2009. In addition to legal questions for foreigners and refugees, she devoted herself to integration and human rights in general. Števulová is a member of the Committee for the Prevention and Elimination of Racism, Xenophobia, Anti-Semitism and Other Forms of Intolerance (Výbor pre predchádzanie a elimináciu rasizmu, xenofóbie, antisemitizmu a ostatných foriem intolerancie, VRAX), which is an advisory body to the Slovak government . She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Slovak National Center for Human Rights (Slovenské národné stredisko pre ľudské práva), which was appointed by the President of the Slovak Republic.

Števulová regularly writes comments for the Slovak daily SME and, in collaboration with EURACTIV.sk , creates a series of informative articles on migration and asylum .

As the director of the Human Rights League, which provides legal and other support to foreigners, Števulová was one of her country's most important advocates for the rights of refugees and migrants. In a country where a high number of asylum applications are rejected, she has won numerous cases before the Supreme Court of Slovakia for her clients in deportation and asylum procedures . Since the beginning of the European refugee crisis , Števulová has sought support and compassion for refugees. She has criticized the attitude of politicians towards refugees and Muslims . It breaks down social prejudices and fears, introduces citizens to refugees who have successfully integrated.

Awards

In 2016, Zuzana Števulová was the first Slovak woman to receive the “ International Women of Courage Award ”. Among the fourteen women of the year awarded were Shanna Nemtsova from Russia , Latifa Ibn Ziaten from France and the lawyer Ni Yulan , who campaigns for civil rights in China . The award was presented by John Kerry .

Under Števulová's leadership, the Human Rights League won several awards. In 2013 she was named Human Rights Defender of the Year by the United States Embassy in Bratislava , and in 2015 and 2016 she received awards from other institutions.
