Up, up, you shepherds in the field

Up, up, you shepherds in the field is a Christmas carol from the Alpine region, especially from Carinthia .

origin

In 1881 Wilhelm Pailler published the text of the song recorded in Brixen (then Tyrol ), which he comprised of five stanzas . Pailler suspected the origin of the text “from a larger [nativity] play ”. Pailler did not deliver a melody. Arnold Blöchl put four different melodies together in his “Melodiarium”, none of which exactly match Pailler's text. The oldest in the form of a three-song is still common today. It was recorded in 1906 in Sankt Jakob im Lesachtal (Carinthia). The other melodies were recorded in Burgeis ( South Tyrol ), Völs , in East Tyrol but also in Lorraine .
