On the way to school (original title: Sur le chemin de l'école ) is a 77-minute documentary by Pascal Plisson from 2013 , which was released in German cinemas on December 5, 2013.

content

The film tells of the arduous and dangerous journey to school for several children from different countries around the world.

The 11-year-old Jackson from Kenya sets out with his little sister on the 15-kilometer route through the savannah of Kenya. This route takes him two hours; has to carry along a canister of drinking water , take care of his sister and avoid herds of elephants. Both children walk and run. The way to school leads the children across the open landscape; there are no paths or roads, not even beaten tracks. The living conditions in their village are very simple; there is no clean drinking water, only groundwater for drinking and washing clothes; the porridge is cooked over an open fire. All family members live in a mud hut. The children must also help with the work of the adults. None of the children has exercise books, pens or writing paper - all of this is only available in the poorly equipped school building, which consists of a stone building covered with corrugated iron.

Zahira, 12, comes from Morocco and has to cross the Atlas Mountains with other schoolgirls on her way to school. Because one of the schoolgirls sprained her ankle, the girls are forced to stop a van , which fortunately takes them with it - squeezed between animals. Zahira has a live chicken with her, which she trades in the market for a bag of dried fruit on the way. The girls need four hours to walk 22 kilometers to school. Unlike her grandmother, Zahira is in the fortunate position of getting any schooling, owning pens and exercise books and being able to do her homework. They all live in a stone house in a village in the Atlas Mountains. Zahira and her classmates - unlike Jackson in Kenya - at least have the option of using paved paths and roads.

Samuel, 13 years old, is from Bengal, India. The siblings have to push him in a rusty wheelchair over sandy, unpaved roads, over hills and through a stream for four kilometers to school, which takes them an hour. In between, the wheelchair tire comes off the rim and has to be repaired in a workshop. It is not clear from the film which illness Samuel suffers from.

Carlito, 11 years old, comes from Patagonia in Argentina . He comes from a privileged family; he and his younger sister ride the 18 kilometers to school on horseback, which takes them 1.5 hours. The path over the mountains is partly steep and dangerous for the horse.

At the end of the film, all children arrive safely at school. Jackson hoists the Kenyan flag and the other students sing the national anthem. Zahira also arrives at school safe and sound. Samuel is lifted out of the wheelchair by his classmates and carried into the classroom.

Reviews

“The French director Pascal Plisson mainly lets images speak in his documentation. Although his young protagonists have their say, their sentences often seem put through the smooth translation. The synchronization is too flawless when the children talk about the dangers of their way to school. Nevertheless: Plisson shows that he is at home in the documentary film genre with successful, atmospheric landscape shots. A slightly different view of the difficulties of going to school. "
