The Augartenspitz represents the southernmost part of the Augarten in Vienna's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt . The walled park area ends there at an acute angle, formed by Oberer Augartenstrasse and Castellezgasse.

history

The Augarten, originally part of the floodplains of the then still unregulated Danube , was opened by Joseph II on May 1, 1775 as a “place of amusement dedicated to all people by their appraiser” (inscription at the main entrance) and has been a listed building since January 1, 2000. Despite violent protests from citizens 'initiatives , a concert and multi-purpose hall for the Vienna Boys' Choir rented in the Augartenpalais was built in the Augartenspitz by 2012 . Under the name MuTh - The abbreviation stands for music and theater , but also plays with the term courage : The first event after the opening was the “Congress on Courage”, a multi-layered performance based on the concept by Carmen Brucic under the motto Let's Today To be hopelessly brave at night - the building was officially opened on December 9, 2012.

The legality of the rededication of the area for further development has been disputed by opponents of the project since 2006. Corruption has not been ruled out. For example , appraisers commissioned by the Federal Monuments Office were supposedly connected to the client. The donor was the "POK Pühringer Privatstiftung" from Peter Pühringer ; the construction work was entrusted to the Pühringer construction company. At times, but unsuccessfully, the use of the area by the Filmarchiv Austria, located in the adjoining buildings, was discussed.

From 2007 onwards there were several occupations in order to prevent the foreseeable tree felling, but this was ultimately ended by the deployment of the police and private security forces. The last tangible confrontations between activists and law enforcement officers took place in March 2010 on the occasion of the definitive eviction. Then the area was cordoned off and cleared; the official start of construction was July 14, 2010.

The Green Vienna , which was the only political party to speak out against the project in public, visibly withdrew its support for the activists when they started a coalition with the Vienna SPÖ in autumn 2010 (see provincial government and city senate Häupl V ). The green top candidate Maria Vassilakou blogged before the election: … we Greens will fight tooth and nail for the Augartenspitz! . After the election she confessed: I can no longer undo the disaster in the Augarten.

Outside the area leased from the state as the landowner of the Augarten by the WSK (Wiener Sängerknaben) association, a "resistance tent" of the activists, which was regularly used for cultural events, stood from 2010 onwards, which also achieved modest partial successes: the baroque guard house was not demolished and greening began, as far as the building and the paved courtyard would allow.

On May 12, 2014 at around 8 a.m., the movement's two tents and their furnishings burned down. However, the city fire brigade was able to give "fire off!" Within a short time. The cause of the fire was investigated. There was no personal injury because none of the activists was present at the property at the time.

Transport links

With the extension of the U2 underground line , the U2 station Taborstraße was opened next to the Augartenspitz in 2008 and at the same time one of the two tram lines in Taborstraße was closed. The bus line 5B and tram line 2 stop in the immediate vicinity. Residents complained that a concept for dealing with the expected increased volume of individual traffic at events was not yet available.
